The desire

The first thing is to have the desire to do this job.  When looking into bail bonds most people think that it is easy money.  Simply accept a bond, make sure that they show up in court and clean up on the initial fee.  Well, there is a lot more to it than that.  The main component you need to protect yourself against is what happens if they don’t appear in court and you need to pay the full bond?

Minimum Requirements

The minimum requirements to be a bondsman is to be at least eighteen years of age, hold a high school diploma or a GED and be able to pass the licensing requirements and testing.  If you are able to do this, then you can be issued a license to become a bail bondsman and open your own company.

Financial obligations

The main component that you need to look at is how will you pay for bonds?  When you deal with the court system, they want their money and they want it right then and there.  They don’t want to hear that you don’t have it or that you will get it Friday.  When the court issues a request for payment you better have the cash.  This is why you will want to have a security backer or other forms of cash capital on hand.

If you are able to meet these basic requirements and maintain a good standing with people in the community, then people will turn to you when they are in trouble and you can get them out of jail.  Just be aware that there will be people out to game the system and just don’t care.  Protect yourself and your business.
